The Scythe Mugen boasts their new Infinity Interleave Fin Structure (IIFS) for higher efficiency, four way mounting. It offers tool free installation and has five heatpipes in a U-shaped configuration. It also fits every desktop CPU socket type.

At 160mm tall the Mugen is enormous! Attached to the five U-shaped heatpipes are 58 aluminium fins. These fins provide the Mugen with a massive surface area which dissipates the heat from the CPU. Every alternate fin is shorter - Scythe call this IIFS (Infinity Interleave Fin Structure) and it is this structure that makes the Mugen a very efficient CPU cooler; so much so that it will cool any CPU currently on the market!

Installation of the Mugen is extremely simple. Just like the Samurai Z and the Mine, the Mugen uses VTMS (Versatile Tool-free Multiplatform System). This is one of the easiest mounting systems we have come across because no tools are required for installation. You do not even need to remove the motherboard from the system if your PC is already built.

The Mugen uses a 3-pin (not a 4-pin PWM) fan so there is no default speed control and this makes it an ideal choice for use with older processors (such as 478, AM2 939). If however you prefer to have some control over the fan speed then we would recommend that you use a Zalman FANMATE 2 or similar fan controller, which will allow you to set your own balance between cooling and noise. Many processors simply won’t need the fan running at full speed in order to keep them cool.

The Infinity is a very quiet, well-performing heatsink that is easy to use. It should be able to cool just about any processor with a minimum of noise.

Having tested and owned a lot of heatsink coolers in my time, I have to say that the Scythe infinity tops them all. The quality of the heatsink build is second to none, whereas often you get some shabby workmanship at some point on a heatsink. I could not find any on the Infinity - this thing really is top notch.

It’s capable of keeping an overclocked and overvolted Athlon 64 X2 icy-cool, with its 120mm fan spinning slowly and quietly. Unless you like noisy PCs, there’s no reason not to buy an Infinity.

What a performance during the thermal tests! Especially the passive configuration, which wiped the floor with its direct competitors. Results for the actively-cooled set up were also very respectable and the two sets together emphasise just how versatile the Infinity is.
