Scythe Mugen 2 Rev.B Quiet CPU Cooler Ultra
Replaces the best-selling Mugen; redesigned with five fin towers for improved processor cooling by up to 7 degrees C!
Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B CPU cooler is the consistent further development of the award-winning Mugen CPU cooler. Several features make this cooler the perfect solution for silent users and overclockers! New Rev. B is equipped with advanced back-plate to simplify mounting as well as providing socket LGA 1556 compatibility. Mugen 2 is on the latest state of technology and was produced using highest Japanese quality standards.
At first glance you may think that there is very little difference between the Mugen 1 and Mugen 2. It is only when you look at the cooler from above do you really notice the difference. The Mugen 2 has been split into five columns with one U-shaped heatpipes feeding through each column. According to Scythe this re-design has increased the cooling power of the Mugen by up to 7°C, which is some achievement!

Pure Overclock
The Scythe Mugen 2 Rev.B is capable of good performance with silence. We’d jump in a heartbeat to recommend it to users looking to overclock moderately while keeping noise down… for those looking for a balance between quiet operation and strong performance, then the Mugen 2 Rev.B is a solid choice.
Total PC Gaming
Even at full speed the fan was extremely quiet and well below the noise produced by our PSU and GTX275 video card. Despite this, the heatsink produced fabulous temperatures that were the joint best on show. Taking an average of the four cores it registered just 65° C at full load, leaving huge amounts of headroom for further overclocking. Overall: 80%.
Custom PC Magazine
Cooling was excellent and the Mugen 2 was extremely quiet. It recorded the second lowest delta T on Socket AM2+ processors of 36°C, and the third lowest on LGA1366 of 46°C - far lower than the reference HSFs.
Micromart magazine
At idle, the test system ran at a chilling 33°C, and the stress level was just 9°C above that level. That’s better than any other cooler here, and certainly ideal for most overclocking projects. Overall the Mugen 2 is more about functionality than good looks, and with it Scythe has delivered a strong contender that won’t break the bank. Overall: 8/10.

Scythe Mugen 2 Rev B
A great cooler overall. It is a bit on the large side, so check your case dimensions first; I have it fitted in a Fractal R3 case with no issues. It is also quite light considering its size, and it has a full metal backplate so it is fitted by bolting through the motherboard which is a good thing.
I used Arctic Silver thermal compound instead of the supplied one. On a Core i5 760 with no overclocking, this runs around 600 rpm with an idle temp of 27 degrees, but that is with no other case fans connected. With the 2 x 120mm case fans fitted to the Fractal case connected up, it drops to just under 400 rpm with an idle temp of 22 degrees. Either way, it runs very cool indeed and is extremely quiet. You wont be disappointed with this one! As a result of this cooler and fan, I will be retro-fitting my case with Scythe fans too.
2500k @ 4.5 in tiny case :-) and it's quiet.
Ok. first of all lost a star for a slightly fiddly mounting system. I ended up putting the cooler on a table and lowering the MB onto it. BUT the end result is much better than the normal Scythe push pins buried under cooler and scarred fingers approach.
In my ASUS p8p67 you’d lose the first two memory slots if using memory with large heat sinks but corsair xms3 etc will be fine. No problems clearing the PSU as someone mentioned earlier (1155 and 1156 sockets are further from the edges of MBs than 775 sockets) so perhaps that is the cause of someone else’s problems. There however is not much room between the HS and the first card slot so a big passive graphics cooler might clash. Overall very, very happy.
Silent but Massive
The pictures don’t really show how big this is, I thought my previous Katana 3 was big. It does run silent and cool, I have a Phenom II 555 with 4 cores active running BOINC and it keeps it under 55C with the fan running silently around 800 rpm. Be careful over memory with raised heat spreaders as they may limit your choice of which side you can place the fan due to the bottom of the metal clip.
Small it isn't...
Bit of a tight fit in an old Dell Dimension 3000 being pressed into Linux server duties - the case is slightly narrower than usual and this along with the impressed Dell logo on the removable side panel means the top of the heatsink presses slightly against it. But, the panel still slides back on with a bit of extra shoving. ;)
Result? considerably more effective and quieter than the Dell fan which went berserk when the machine was made to do anything more serious than twiddling its thumbs while wordprocessing.
The Dell BIOS is very basic - no PWM control and no temperature monitoring AT ALL so I’m running as a 3-wire fan - but the Scythe fan at full speed is still much quieter than the Dell fan at minimum speed and the heatsink is now barely tepid with the machine “running busy” instead of borderline hot with the Dell heatsink.
Highly recommended - but carefully check your case dimensions first - I only just got away with it!
Works well
Bought this to replace the stock cooler on my Q6600 (Quad 2.4GHz) processor. The stock cooler used to make quite a racket when the CPU was heavily used, and it still ran hot. This new cooler on the other hand runs super quiet even when pushed, with temperatures very comfortable. It does such a good job that I’ve now overclocked my processor up to 3.0 GHz, and even when maxing out all 4 cores for hours on end, the temperature hasn’t exceeded 19 C below TJmax.
Big! but excellent
Huge cooler. Thought it would fit easily in my box but it would only fit one way round because it snagged by 1mm on the power supply if fitted vertically. No matter, it goes horizontally and what a difference! Cools all 95W of my quad core Q9450 to 45 degrees and is almost inaudible compared with the stock cooler which was constantly whining loudly, changing speed and struggling at 72 degrees.
Awesome! Just about to order another one.
Excellent
Bought this product on Tuesday received it next day also excellent technical support on product bit fiddly to install but overall a excellent buy.
